ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Investment Fellowship will meet immediately after the regular Rotary meeting on Wednesday, March 15.  Topics: “Surging Markets, Declining Investment Costs, and Dying Retailers and Shopping Centers.”  Everyone is welcome to attend.  This will be an educational and fun discussion.

Bonnie Titley announced that Garth McCann's wife, Peggy Barnstorff, died last Sunday after a hard battle with cancer.  Garth is establishing an annual award in her name to honor a person in the Special Services area in the Poudre School District.  Details on the award and a celebration of Peggy's life will come later.

On your Event's Calendar save the date of Saturday, March 25th.  That is the evening of the annual "Black Tie Bingo" party sponsored by the Rotary After-Work Club and Idea Wild.  There will be food from 6 different local restaurants, free Margaritas, five bingo games with great prizes, a silent auction, a presentation of six wildlife conservation projects and lots of fun and fellowship.  Rotarian, Wally Van Sickle would like to fill at least 8 places at a table exclusively for our club members.  If you would like to attend, please talk with Lloyd Thomas or reserve a place for yourself online at: ideawild@ideawild.org or FCBlacktiebingo.com.

Stacy Plemmons noted that Tom Peterson’s glioblastoma had returned, and it is inoperable.  He is experiencing balance and short term memory issues, and appreciates phone calls from Rotarians.

Stacy also noted that Max Getts is in the Lemay Avenue Rehab, just south of Harmony, and appreciates visits.  In good news, over the last several months Max has been working with The Rotarian Magazine, and has been notified that they will run a feature story in the June Rotarian (available approximately May 25) on RCFC’s 4-Way Test School Program, created by Max and RCFC members in the 90’s.  Rotary passion lives on in Max!

It was announced that this years’ Service In Action celebration will occur as an evening event this year, Wednesday April 19, to accommodate spouses and Satellite members.  Please save the date.

Some of the topics will include: eligibility and enrollment, mental health services, aid & attendance, and navigating the VA system. Questions? Call the Office on Aging at 970-498-7750 or the Chilson Senior Center at 970-962-2423.

People are asking about Rotary's next outing into the wonders of nature.  I am providing you with links to City of Fort Collins http://www.fcgov.com/naturalareas/ and Larimer County http://www.larimer.org/news/newsDetail.cfm?id=4495 departments of natural resources who offer guided hikes night and day. For some events you can just show up, others need for you to register, and all are free. It is my and others' professional opinion that we all need to support programs that already exist, rather than expending energies to create new events which diffuse participation.  Rotarians can learn from others and recruit new members in the process.
I discussed this approach with our Fellowship Committee yesterday and we agreed with this approach and perhaps to offer some Rotary reflection times after some events at a restaurant, coffee shop or beer garden.   I do not plan to promote all of the events that are offered again over the summer, but encourage you to check out the web sites on occasion.  We might select a few programs to emphasize and to solicit your participation.  Let me know your thoughts.
Get out and enjoy the grand canvas that is washed with new paints and witnessed with new insights by the moment. Take a kid and an adult with you.  Share your contagious enthusiasm and show that Rotary has diverse interests. - Del Benson

LEGACY FUND - AUTOMATE YOUR GIVING
A number of Rotarians have their gift to the Legacy Fund made quarterly as a part of their payment of dues and meals.  Last year this amounted to nearly $27,000 which helps bring our total closer to the $1million goal by August 2018, for our 100th anniversary.  It’s easy and every donation helps in assuring Rotary’s service in action forever.

If you have announcements please email them to erin@ahome4life.com or just reply to the Rotogear email to get listed in the Rotogear.

Vocational Service - 50 Jobs in 50 States
This week Rotarians hear from an experienced traveler, author, job seeker, and the subject of an upcoming TV show and movie, who seems unable to hold a job.  In seeking employment after college, Daniel Seddiqui managed to have 50 jobs in 50 states, and will share what he learned from that experience, especially about something dear to our hearts - vocational service.  Daniel will share how the exposure to different lines of work and people helped him find his purpose, how a majority of America’s workforce appear to dread the work they do, and ways leaders can address this problem.
Daniel was as a nationally ranked collegiate athlete at the University of Oregon and USC, where he graduated with a degree in economics. He translated that experience into a career as an athletics coach, training Division 1 collegiate athletes, Olympians, and NFL Super Bowl Champions. Daniel enjoys staying competitive with long distance running, and he’s been invited to compete in the 2020 Olympic Games representing Afghanistan, from where his family fled and became refugees.
Daniel Seddiqui calls himself a real-life version of Where’s Waldo.  He has worked in the corn fields of Nebraska, on a lobster boat in Maine, as a weather forecaster in Ohio, as a football coach in Alabama, and as a marriage official for a Las Vegas wedding chapel.  His 50 Jobs in 50 States journey was created out of struggles to land a job after college, and his endeavor gained worldwide media attention, culminating in a book that has been translated into 12 languages.  Plans for a TV show and feature film are underway.
In addition, Daniel has focused his research on the ways in which unemployment affects various communities and the social issues that stem from enduring job loss. Daniel has sought to implement new approaches to activism and public policy to address those societal problems firsthand, which he details in his upcoming book, Going the Extra Mile.
Based on his experience, Daniel founded Living the Map, a company that engages with the varying cultures and careers across the country through educational programs, outreach, and community-building.  Through Living the Map, Daniel has redefined the traditional internship experience by providing a platform for college students to experience 5 Jobs in 5 States in 5 Weeks.  Colleges across the country have implemented this credited program into their curriculum, which encourages students to explore the world around them and to make continuous discoveries to better themselves.
This year, in an effort to heal division in America, Daniel will venture into a new authentic journey called the American Bucket List Challenge.  By exploring 50 cultural events and hobbies in 50 states and learning about the lives of others, Daniel’s cultural immersion will encourage people to get out of their bubble, broaden perspectives, and develop informed views.
Daniel’s work has been featured in countless national and international media outlets, such as CNN, Fox News, NPR, Today Show, Associated Press, BBC, MSN, Yahoo!, C-SPAN, World News Tonight, Wall Street Journal, MSNBC, Weather Channel, TIME, Runner’s World, Huffington Post, Inc. Magazine and Newsweek.  Daniel has earned his spot as a job seeking expert and cultural analyst.
