Out With The Old, In With The New
Wednesday it’s time for our annual change of leadership, when Past President Stacy Plemmons hosts a light roasting of outgoing President Glenn Schmidt, and we induct 2017-2018 President Jeanne Fangman.

Incoming President Jeanne Fangman joined the Rotary Club of Fort Collins in 1994 (sponsored by Julie Johnson-Hafner).  Her Rotary involvement includes being Treasurer of Rotary READ since 1999, Chair of the Care and Recognition Committee, the Membership Committee and on the Community Grants Committee.    She joined the Board of Directors in 2013-14, served as Club Secretary in 2014-15 and was recognized as Quiet Rotarian in May, 2013.

Jeanne Fangman was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota but grew up in Nebraska.  She worked as a medical technician after studying at Duchesne College and the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.  She and her family have lived in Fort Collins since 1979.  One daughter graduated from Fort Lewis College in Durango and the other went to Front Range Community College and CSU.  Both live and work in the area.

Jeanne has been a member of the Chamber’s Leadership Fort Collins serving as a board member and co-chairing the program several years ago.  She is chair of the FRCC Business Department Advisory Board.

Outgoing President Glenn Schmidt joined RCFC in 1995, sponsored by Lannie Boyd.  He was elected to the Board of Directors in 2013-14, has been chair of the Rural Urban Committee and served on the 4 Way Test Program committee, participated regularly in the highway cleanup activities, the History and Investing fellowships.  He and his wife Jean have been married 49 years and have 2 adult sons and 5 grandchildren.
June 21 - Take A Hike!
Bill Moellenhoff has ascended all Colorado fourteeners.  Bill also recognized John Reicht, who has completed all of the 54 Fourteeners in Colorado.  As a show of hands, it appeared that several of our Rotary members have summited at least one fourteener in their lifetime.

Bill entertained the club with his words of wisdom re Colorados’ 54 peaks at least fourteen thousand feet above sea level.  Bill’s affection for hiking to the heights began after “accidently” ascending Twin sisters at the age of 16, and the next day ascending Longs Peak.  By 1981, when he moved to Fort Collins, he had already completed 13 peaks.

The keys to a successful summit hike are relatively simple; one must have a good level of aerobic conditioning, a good degree of knowledge of Colorado weather and common sense.  Proper clothing and footwear are essential.  Bill noted a few exceptions to this formula and explained terms associated with climbing or in some cases hiking at altitude.

He shared his thoughts on preparedness to safely make the journey to the top.  Entertaining the club with some interesting and humorous stories of several of his treks, he encouraged all who have not yet begun to hike the fourteeners to start with the “easiest” of them all, Mount Sherman.

Thank you Bill for an informative and entertaining presentation.

Tom Peterson
It is with great sadness that we give you word of the passing of another of our Rotarians, Tom Peterson.  Tom lost his valiant battle with brain cancer June 22nd.  His family mentioned that they would welcome posts on the Caring Bridge website and I have listed the Caring Bridge information below.  A memorial service will be planned later in the summer.

There are several listings for Tom Peterson.  The one that was started March 03, 2015 is the correct one.

Please join us in sending prayers and support to Tom's wife, Laura and their family.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Science Fellowship - June 28 - Retired (rewired) botanist/ecologist Don Eversoll will lead a discussion about the implications of the imminent invasion of the emerald ash borer.  Our city is host to thousands of Ash trees and the aesthetic and economic affect of losing these trees will be widespread and devastating to many properties. A special guest, Ralph Zentz, Assistant City Forester, will identify possible steps of intervention and offer advice on replacement species.

Services for Bill Schaffter's wife are scheduled for Tuesday, June 27 at 10:30 at First Presbyterian Church.

Sally Lee has had to change the date for touring CSU's 3D printing lab.  Stay tuned.  She also reported we had received $2100 from King Sooper purchases.

Call Dawn T-Baumgartner if you would like to join the VIP tour at the Boy Scout Ranch to see all the improvements.

Mike Stradt urged everyone to sign up for the July 12 picnic at the Youth Outdoors location.  NO NOON MEETING THAT DAY!

Stacy Plemmons asked for a volunteer to back up Erin Mounsey with production of the Rotogear and website content.

Bonnie Titley announced a two-week trip to Morocco in September 2018.  Because travel to Morocco is hot right now, we must file reservations by June 30 or we will lose our slots.  Deposit: $350 per person.  Basic cost: $4145, including airfare from Denver.  Pre- and Post-extensions are available.  Travel insurance strongly encouraged at $499 per person for basic trip (additional for extensions).
Call Bonnie if you have questions, or of you are interested and get our assigned group number.  Additional info online at oat.com.  Look for Morocco Saharan Odysset. "WE ARE CLOSE TO THE MINIMUM 10 WE NEED FOR A SIGNIFICANT FINANCIAL REBATE.  IF YOU ARE AT ALL INTERESTED, PLEASE HELP HOLD OUR GROUP'S DATE BY MAKING A RESERVATION WITH INITIAL DEPOSIT."

Our club provides many thousands of hours of volunteer service in addition to annual giving to charitable projects. Our giving to charitable projects has not grown to keep up with inflation and growing community needs. The RCFC Legacy Fund has established as an endowment that will provide supplemental funds into the foreseeable future for humanitarian and educational programs in and around Fort Collins. Your contributions to the Legacy Fund are tax deductible and will assure “Service in Action Forever”.
