One of the world's most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics is The Four-Way Test, which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy. Adopted by Rotary in 1943, The Four-Way Test has been translated into more than a hundred languages and published in thousands of ways. It asks the following four questions: "Of the things we think, say or do:
More than a decade ago, the Rotary Club of Ft. Collins took the Four-Way Test to junior high school students in small-group round-table discussions where the students apply this simple test to solve sometimes very complicated life issues. Better Business Bureau and Rotary Ethics Scholarship AwardEach year, the Better Business Bureau and Rotary Districts 5440, 5450 and 5470 provide a scholarship to recognize a student who demonstrates an extraordinary level of ethical responsibility. The Ethics Scholarship is for high school students in their junior or senior year and consists of $5,000 to be used at the higher education institution of the winner's choice. Applicants must write a 1500 to 2000 word essay in response to the question "How does the Rotary Four-Way Test apply to your life?" The purpose of RYLA and YRYLA is to encourage and assist current and potential youth leaders in methods of responsible and effective leadership. Each year, the Rotary Club of Ft. Rotary Youth ExchangeEach year, the Rotary Club of Fort Collins sponsors one or more outbound high school students and hosts an inbound student. This extraordinary program gives Rotary youth exchange students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend an entire year in a foreign country where they live with Rotary families and study the normal high school curriculum. Rotary also supports a summer exchange program for students who cannot commit to spending an entire year abroad. In this program, students from the United States are matched with a student in a foreign country and, through Rotary, contacts are made between the two families to permit youth in each country to experience 3-6 weeks in each other's country. Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women ages 18 to 30. Through the Rotaract program, young adults not only augment their knowledge and skills, but they also address the physical and social needs of their communities while promoting international understanding and peace through a framework of friendship and service. The Fort Collins Rotaract Club, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Ft. Collins, was chartered in 2003. The club seeks both professional development and improvement in the quality of life both locally and globally through acts of service.
