100 Years of Scouting

Peder Halseide

Reed Brannon
Be Prepared! Today we hear the history and local perspective on Scouting, when Rotarian Peder Halseide (Assistant Cubmaster with Pack 198) will introduce, Reed Brannon, Scout Executive of the Longs Peak Council, Boy Scouts of America (BSA). The Council serves Northeastern Colorado, Southeastern Wyoming, and the Nebraska Panhandle, includes four Service Centers and five camp properties, has an annual operating budget in excess of $3 million and Assets in excess of $15 million, and has 42 employees, 6,000 volunteer leaders and 15,000 youth members.

The BSA celebrated its 100th anniversary on February 8, 2010, and is one of the largest youth organizations in the United States with over four million youth members. Since its founding more than 110 million Americans have been members of the BSA.

BSA had two notable predecessors in the United States: the Woodcraft Indians, started by Ernest Thompson Seton in 1902, and the Sons of Daniel Boone, founded by Daniel Carter Beard in 1905. In 1907, British General Robert Baden-Powell founded the Scouting movement in England using elements of Seton's works among other influences. In 1909, Chicago publisher W.D. Boyce was visiting London, where he learned of the Scouting movement. Soon after his return to the U.S., Boyce incorporated the Boy Scouts of America on February 8, 1910.

Mr. Brannon received his B.S. in Psychology from Youngstown State University (Cum Laude). Besides numerous scouting honors, in 2002 he was recognized as Entrepreneur of the Year by the Northern Colorado Business Journal. He has served on the Greeley Rotary Board of Directors, the Poudre Trail Fund Raising Committee and as Weld County United Way Division Chair. He is on the University of Northern Colorado, Not for Profit Human Service Organization’s Advisory Board, and has been a UNC Non-Profit Management Adjunct Faculty. He holds a Private Pilot license and relaxes by woodworking and fly fishing.

Reed and his wife of 38 years, Denise A. Brannon are parents of two daughters, Melanie, in Baltimore, and Halle, in Portland. They have five grandchildren.

Agenda for the Rural-Urban Program and Award Winners

Milan Rewerts

Andrew Grant

Jean Reeder
Last Wednesday Milan Rewerts was our master of ceremonies as we celebrated Rural Urban Day, with a speaker and our yearly Rural-Urban awards ceremony.

After the VIP recognition by Richard Skaggs, Myra Monfort awarded scholarships to Courtney Pisano, Cadie Ann Ollila and Brooke Anna Fenwick. Since 1964, the Rotary Club of Ft Collins has recognized a “Master Agriculturalist”, an outstanding farm/ranch individual or family who has made significant community contributions. The recipient is also awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship.

Kirvin Knox presented our Master Agriculturalist 2010 award to Andrew Grant, president and GM of Grant Family Farms in Wellington, who has been instrumental in expanding a small family farm into a successful organic specialty and commodity crops farm distributing produce locally and nationally. Andrew also launched a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program in 2007, connecting the community to locally grown produce. In the last 10 years, Grant Family Farms has donated more than 1,000,000 pounds of fresh produce to Food Banks in Colorado and Texas. Grant was also the Co-Founder of the Tsunami Boat Project in Thailand, replacing 152 fishing boats for those who lost their sole source of income in the 2006 tsunami.

Since 2002, the Rotary Club of Ft Collins has recognized an individual or company not directly involved in agricultural production, who nevertheless contributes to the betterment of the rural community, with the "Service to Agriculture" award. This year Lynn Baker presented the award to the Larimer County Farmer’s Market, who will be celebrating their 35th season this summer. The market was started in 1976 by a small group of Larimer County Master Gardeners as a fundraiser for the Extension Office. Accepting the award on behalf of the Farmer’s Market was Master Gardener Jean Reeder, a retired soils scientist and dedicated volunteer.

Rural-Urban Scholarship Awardees

Courtney Pisano

Cadie Ann Ollila

Brooke Anna Fenwick
Myra Monfort awarded Rural-Urban Committee Scholarships to Courtney Pisano, Cadie Ann Ollila and Brooke Anna Fenwick.

Courtney Pisano, a Loveland native, knew from earliest times, she would attend CSU and work with animals. Her love of horses has taken her through 11 years with Hearts and Horses, a therapeutic riding center; training her Westie puppy and two cats, earned her showmanship recognitions in 4-H and other awards for her photography and artwork; and emotional rewards of sharing her dog with children at Crossroads, Respite Care at her church, and Hearts of Hope at the McKee Medical Center Hospice for children with a loved one dealing with cancer.

She was in the National Honor Society, played violin in the chamber orchestra and volunteered with several other service organizations. She graduated from high school in the top 10 percent of her class and is active in competitive figure skating, training, giving lessons and working at the rink. Horses are still important to her as a member of the CSU Polo Club.

Cadie Ann Ollila is from Wellington and pursuing a degree in Veterinary Technology from Front Range Community College. She is a graduate of Poudre High School where she carried a GPA of 3.6, was active in "Poudre Pals,” a group working with elementary students who in her words "struggled in some way". She spent this past summer in China tutoring English as part of a university program there and contemplates more international work to learn about other cultures.

She has been involved in many community related activities mainly through her church and plans to go overseas this summer as part of a Christian Veterinary Mission program. She works as a custodian in the Poudre School District.

Brooke Anna Fenwick is a senior at Rocky Mountain High School and carries a GPA of 3.66. She plans to attend Colorado State University to major in Food and Nutritional Sciences. She has been involved in 4-H for eight years and received many awards for a wide variety of projects. She also has served in leadership roles as secretary, vice president and president of her club.

Along with a number of community and school activities, she has played volleyball since ninth grade and was named to the CHSSAA Academic All-State First Team both her junior and senior years.

Last Week's Program

Kirvin Knox

Matthew "Quint" Redmonds
Thanking him for defining the word "Agriburbia" last November, Kirvin Knox introduced Golden Rotarian Matthew "Quint" Redmonds, president and CEO of TSR Group, Inc., whose main mission is to recognize and promote the positive social, cultural, physical and financial characteristics of both urban and rural lifestyles. With the help of slides, his talk, he said, was designed to show how we can help build the infrastructure for the next generation of farming. He then introduced some relevant terminology such as "comparative caloric proximity," "food security planning," and "water security."

After emphasizing his belief that the land surface must provide all the resources for basic human needs, Quint then showed us a series of graphs called "The Carbon Triangle" which dealt with the human needs of shelter, transportation, and food in urban, suburban, and rural areas. He stated that Agriburbia wishes to combine and evaluate all these areas.

He believes that we need roughly 10% of our population to become farmers in order to adequately feed us, and also that we should not create any loss of agricultural values. He presented in detail one example, the 297.7 acre Milliken project that contains new condos, parks, and natural areas, including 151 acres of Civic Farms that are publicly owned and produce a cash crop. The entire project has a net agricultural value of 2,082,168 dollars.

Quint concluded that Agriburbia is really an economic formula for sustainability with a mission to meet our basic needs by connecting more of our population to the land.
