Talent Show

Phyllis Abt

Del Benson

Tanis Roeder
PLAYBILL: Ladies, Gentlemen, Fellow Rotarians. Today we are excited to present the 2nd Annual Rotary’s Got Talent, Talent Show. Thankfully, this year our fellow Rotarians were much more willing to volunteer - apparently many have been working on their talent in preparation for this big event.

We would like to thank the following people for their participation in this event (in estimated order of appearance): Phyllis Abt, Melanie Chamberlain, Judy Boggs, Bill West and Special Guest, John and Mabel Roberts, Kris Boesch, Lorraine Williams, CJ Streit, Jim Butzek, Bonnie Titley and Garth McCann. Commercial breaks courtesy of Max Getts assisted by Lannie Boyd. Lighting provided by Ron Rutz.

Please show your support for all of those who participate through applause, laughter, and sheer enjoyment of what they are going to present for you. After all…the show must go on.

Who could forget last years performances. With Jim Butzek on the accordion, Phyllis Abt danced around the floor in a skit they called "It Takes Two to Tango." Or Jim Bragonier playing the keyboard accompanied by Del Benson, first on the didgeridoo then on the gutbucket. And Tanis Roeder and Brian Grossman jitterbugged to Rockin' Robin.

Disclaimer: Please keep in mind that the Rotary Club of Downtown makes no guarantees that our participants will be truly talented; in fact some of them are downright untalented. But before making any snide remarks, please remember, at least they volunteered!!!!

Foundation Minute

John-David Sullivan
John-David Sullivan's Foundation Minute was about Rotary Grants for University Teachers. About 20 grants are given each year for teaching at a university in a developing country. The primary purpose of this grant is to build understanding while strengthening higher education in low-income countries. The stipend is for $13,000 for a 3-5 month teaching term and $24,000 for a 6-10 month term. The applications are due by October 1, 2008 for the term starting after July 1, 2009, but before June 30, 2010. A program guide for this Rotary Grant can be found at: Grants for University Teachers

Classification Talk
I am Jamie Grim and my classification is Education - Government. As I sat down to begin writing about my career and my background, I wondered how on earth I, as the youngest member in the club, was going to fill 3 minutes! I’m still trying to decide what I want to be when I finally grow up! I decided to discuss my history with Rotary and why I am here today.

Jamie Grim

My grandfather, Charles Sayre is a Methodist Minister and life long Rotarian. He is currently a member of the Haddonfield, New Jersey Rotary Club and has been for the past 40 years. As a sophomore in high school, I was fortunate enough to be the recipient of a Rotary Youth Leadership Award and spent a week in Estes Park with other students interested in service. I remember at the time being amazed that there were so many students like me who just wanted to make a difference. I left RYLA inspired and ready to take on the world.

However, My defining Rotary moment came during my senior year of college in Dharamsala, India. I fell in love with the country from my first moments on the ground. After my incredible journey in India, I decided that international service was something I wanted to pursue. I chose Northwestern University and a degree in Educational Administration and sailed off to Chicago. When I graduated I began to look for jobs as a service learning coordinator on a college campus, but in the midst of that I began volunteering with the Markey Campaign. Currently I serve as the Finance Director for Betsy Markey’s Campaign for Congress

I want to be a leader for my generation and devote myself to serving the world. I’m just beginning my career, but I look forward to a long history with Rotary and continuing my commitment to service.
