CSU Athletic Player of the Year Awards

Shelly Godkin

On April 16, 2008, the Rotary Club of Fort Collins will honor Colorado State University student-athlete 2007/2008 "Player of the Year" from each intercollegiate sport.  Honorees are selected by their peers and coaches, and Rotary recognizes both the student-athlete, and their coaches.

This year marks the 21st consecutive year of Rotary's "Player of the Year Awards” luncheon.  Past President Shelly ("How About Those RAMS") Godkin will be our host and Master of Ceremonies.

Becky Hammon

Shelly and the CSU Athletic Department have been working closely to present this year’s program.  In announcing the awards they note the selections are based both on athletic skills and on team leadership, as shown through such ‘soft skills’ as character, integrity, values, respect and motivation.

Each "MVP" will receive an individual plaque, and their names will be engraved on team trophies.  All trophies are sponsored by the Rotary Club and individual Rotarians.  Prior to the meeting the trophies will be on display at the front of the room, and after will be displayed in the CSU McGraw Athletic Center.

A name you might remember is one of the "rare" three time Rotary “MVP” winners - women's basketball player Becky Hammon.  Playing for the Lady Rams from 1995 to 1999, she was the all-time leading scorer, regardless of gender, in the old WAC (Western Athletic Conference); three time WAC Player of the Year; WAC Freshman of the Year; 15-time WAC Player of the Week; and the first freshman ever to be named WAC Tournament MVP.  Becky also recently announced she would be playing for Russia, where she plays professional basketball in the off-season, in the Olympics.  We really are in a ‘global economy’, and Rotary really is ‘International’.

Special Request
Students at Rivendell School read “Three Cups of Tea” and decided to do something to build and support schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The began a program called “Pennies for Peace”—each penny buys a pencil for student in one of those countries. They asked Rotarians to help—and passed jars among the tables. Anyone with extra pennies at home can deliver them to the Rivendell School.

The 2008 “Rotary’s Got Talent” show was organized by Phyllis Abt, Melanie Chamberlain, Bonnie Titley and Tannis Roeder. There were eight different acts with two commercial breaks in the show. Jim Bragonier provided music for a couple of acts and both before and after the meeting. Max Getts and Lannie Boyd did the commercial breaks and Ron Rutz and Henry Ho provided logistical support. Tanis Roeder acted as the Master of Ceremonies. The following are brief descriptions of the acts.

Phyllis Abt started the show by singing, “There’s No Business Like Show Business.”

Melanie Chamberlain and Judy Boggs sang “Sisters.”

The first commercial break was a slide show of unusial pictures from throughout the world.

John Roberts and Steve Laine led the club in singing, “Do Your Ears Hang Low.” John’s dog Mabel was a great help and had
her tears tied into a bow.

Kris Boesch performed a dance to Latin American music.

Lorraine Williams provided a sampling of clothes the she made. The models were Brenda Carns, Judy Boggs, Tammie Niemann,
             Dawn Davis, Sue Wagner
and Lorraine.

C. J. Streit performed some magic tricks for us in an act he called, “The C.J. Streit of Hand Show.”

Jim Butzek planed the accordion while some of the club members danced.

Max Getts provided the second commercial break.

The performances ended with Bonnie Titley and Garth McCann performing the skit, Who’s On First.”

The club thanks all those who planned, organized, helped and performed in the second, “Rotary’s Got Talent” show.
