Today we have the opportunity to practice that charge.
Each year the Rotary Foundation sponsors over 1,100 scholars, students, and educators for study, instruction, outreach and connection with people in foreign lands. Our hosts, Omnia El-Hakim and Dan Mackey, will report on our Ambassadorial Scholarship program, and we will hear from two recipients.
Esther Mngola, our current inbound Rotary Exchange student will discuss her life in Kenya and England, and her experience here in Fort Collins. She was born in Kenya, and immigrated to England at the age of 11. Since then she has live in Marston Moretaine, a village of 4000, just 5 km from Bedford, England, and was sponsored by the Bedford Rotary Club (District 1070). Esther currently attends Poudre High, and (at last check) intends to study international relations in college. Besides “the Queen’s English” she speaks Swahili, and has three sisters and one brother.
Our 2009-10 outbound Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar is Phoenix Mourning-Star, currently a graduate student at Colorado State University. Phoenix came to Fort Collins to study Environmental and Public Heath Epidemiology. He is a graduate of Mesa State College’s Mathematics Department and has his master’s degree in Biostatistics from the University of Vermont. During the summer of 2008, Phoenix will be traveling to Geneva, Switzerland working with the World Health Organization (WHO) to revise the Global Burden of Disease Project’s estimates of global lead exposure and research viable new biomarkers. In addition, he will be attending Global Health Sustainability and Policy training through Duke University’s Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy.

The heart of Rotary is Service Above Self. Rotary believes it is vital to provide recognition to those who actively participate in service activities. This award is given to both Rotarians and non-Rotarians who contribute significantly to the betterment of life in this community.
The recipient of 2007-2008 Service Above Self award is Mr. Jack Lundt in recognition of his years of selfless service to the youth of our community. Jack recently retired after spending thirty years teaching math and science to junior high and high school students in the PSD.
Jack has truly distinguished himself in his selfless dedication to our youth by coaching teams of high school students that compete in the three national science and math tournaments. In Science Olympiad, his team have won State an incredible 15 times and, at nationals, his teams have always finished in the top 12 or better including 3rd and 2nd place finishes in 1997 and 1998 respectively. In National Ocean Science Bowl, Jack’s teams have won the State title in 1999, placed 3rd in 2000, 2nd in 2001 and have won every year since! At nationals, his teams placed 3rd in 2004 and 2nd in 2006. In National Science Bowl, Jack’s teams have won the State title in 1997, 98, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008. At nationals, his teams placed in the top 10 in 1998, 2004 and 2006 and won the national championship in 2007. Poudre High School is the ONLY school in the country to have sent a team to the Nationals of all three major competitions, a feat accomplished not only once but three times, in 2003, 2004 and 2006.
Jack continues to volunteer untold hours of his personal time coaching high school students in our nation’s prestigious science and math tournaments. Jack and his wife Sandra Lundt, Principal of PHS, enjoy the mountains, traveling and spending quiet evenings at their home on Terry Lake.

"We were eight strokes back going in and I told the guys, `Just go out there, play hard and put up a number,'" said Head Coach Jamie Bermel following the Rams victory. "We were in good shape, and I knew that if we just put up a solid round, we would have a shot." With their Round 3 total 278, Colorado State finished the tournament with a 2-under-par 850, overcoming TCU, BYU and UNLV for the championship.

Three Rams captured Top 10 finishes, led by sophomore Riley Arp, who posted a career-best finish with a tie for second. Arp, a native of Fort Collins, fired a 1-under-par 70 on Saturday, carding three birdies in the final round, including the par-4 18th hole to finish the tournament.
"I walked with Riley the last couple of days and today I told him, `You've got this nailed,'" added Bermel. "So I walked 18 with Zen (Brown) today, and Riley turned in his best round of the tournament." Sophomores Dustin Morris and Bryce Hanstad finished tied for fifth and 10th, respectively, and garnered all-conference honors. Morris matched his second-round score with a 1-under-par 70 to finish one stroke behind Arp with an even-par 213. The Crosby, Texas, native carded four birdies in his final round.

He then introduced Irish Elementary teacher Jeannie Craft who helped initiate this dental program at Irish. Jeannie was one of our Teachers of the Month last year and represented our club for last years Teacher of the Year Award. Jeannie talked about her less than successful experiences of trying to get young students to brush their teeth before “Smile” started. From that experience she talked about the need for education about dental hygiene. She told us a couple of stories about students experiences with “Smile”, about the many positive letters form parents, and about some results of parents questionnaires.
Next, Ray introduced “Project Smile” leader Ron Lautzenheiser, a member of North Fort Collins Business Association (NFCBA). Ron gave us a brief history of the program, who were its supporters and several events that have helped the effort. He described several reasons for the program and finished telling us the goal to expand into other schools.
