Dr. Larry Penley
|
Dr. Larry Edward Penley became the 13th president of Colorado State University and Chancellor of the CSU System on August 1, 2003 after years of budget troubles. The university had been subject to a spirit of scarcity with declining morale and the loss of a clear vision. This resulted in an inward focus throughout the university making our "strengths secret."
Over the last five years the university can take pride in taking advantage of those strengths. The Budget is the best in years. In 2009 there is new revenue for student needs. CSU's national profile has increased with the attraction of new faculty lines. The university is proud of the new Computer Science Building, ground breaking for the Business School, the Indoor Practice Field, University Center of Arts (opening this fall), and the Super Cluster concept which brings business and academics together.
Additionally, CSU achievements include: a 38 percent increase in the number of endowed chairs; A new record in CSU research expenditures ($297M during fiscal year 2007; continued increases in enrollment; steady progress in improving graduation rates; and continued ranking in the top tier of American research universities.
During a recent visit to the Council on Foreign Relations on energy and climate, Dr. Penley observed that there is a high level of abstractions and focus on past "sins." -without much in the way of practical solutions. CSU is well positioned to help provide a winning pragmatism, particularly with the linkage between the academic and business structure which will increase Research and Development, a culture of production, and "knowledge into profit." Dr. Penley is an honorary member of the Rotary Club of Fort Collins.
