Ron Rutz has been a member of our club since 1977. He was born in Greeley, raised on a farm north of Windsor, and attended CSU. While at CSU Ron farmed, occasionally rode bulls, and did a little gold prospecting. Ron went on to New York University Law School as a Root-Tilden legal scholar, taught at the University of Alabama Law School, and practiced in Hawaii before returning home to Colorado.
He practices law in the areas of estate planning, real estate, and corporate/LLCs; teaches when he has time; and has written columns for the Senior Voice and Fort Collins Coloradoan.
Gold panning is a method used to recover gold from placer deposits. A placer deposit is a concentration of a natural material accumulated in the loose sediments of a stream bed, beach, or residual deposit from earlier mining efforts. Gold undiscovered in earlier mining efforts is likely to accumulate in placer deposits because of its weight and resistance to corrosion.
The process of washing material in a pan, referred to as "panning," is the simplest, most commonly used and least expensive method to separate gold from the accompanying materials.

The relationship started when Edwin’s son contracted Dengue. He went to the internet for a search and typed in “Dengue and Rotary.” What came up was the Rotary Club of Fort Collins—doing a 3H Grant started by Dengue expert Dutch Gubler, then the head of the Fort Collins Center of Disease Control and a member of our club. The relationship grew to numerous projects hosted by Rotary Clubs in Illinois, California, Colorado, and Canada.
Dr. Oliva thanked our club for initiating the idea for successful matching grant projects which are currently addressing health (i.e., Dengue prevention), hunger, youth sports, ambulatory care, community sanitation, and youth education. In addition to his private pediatric clinic and hospital, Dr. Oliva volunteers medical services to the less fortunate at the Nutritional Rehabilitation Center and the community health clinic. Rotary member and City of Fort Collins Mayor, Doug Hutchinson, presented the keys to the City and thanked Edwin and Maynor for the relationship the town of Gualán now has with Fort Collins. Edwin and Maynor presented a huge plaque to Mayor Doug commemorating the visit. The Gualan group traveled to the Rotary 5440 District Conference last week and presented their story of World Community Rotary Projects to the District. Edwin thanked the club and Interact youth for the home that was built last year by our club for the Ana America Vasquez family. Next week a new team will travel to Guatemala to build a second home for the Martinez family. Edwin thanked the club and especially Susie Ewing for hosting a reception at the Ewing’s two weeks ago.
