During the four Rotary years 2002 to 2006, the Fort Collins Rotary Club, through our World Community Services Committee and in cooperation with host country Rotary clubs, completed 22 international projects worth $707,290. Of the $707,290, our club contributed $75,654 from dues, while the remaining 89.4% came from matching funds grants and other sources. Since inception, International Service projects worth nearly $2 million have been completed by our club. Today, Dave Stewart and Claude Piché will report on current World Community Service activities and will highlight recent example projects. The recently completed San Isidro water project will pipe water from a slow sand filter treatment plant in San Isidore, Colombia to three nearby villages. The treatment plant was completed under a previous matching grant project.
In Santa Maria, Mexico, a wastewater treatment plant and associated tilapia project has just been completed. Next, the rehabilitation of an 1850's stone three-arch dam and irrigation system will enable irrigation of over 500 acres. These two projects will enable Santa Maria orphanage self-sufficiency and will provide older children training in both agriculture and aquaculture. These projects are also expected to generate adequate funds to send up to 4 student/orphans to college each year.

In Indonesia, Guatemala and elsewhere, very successful Dengue fever reduction/prevention programs have developed into long-term relationships, and leveraged into numerous other local community projects (housing, water, nutrition, economic development, etc.).
In El Salvador, several water projects have been completed in cooperation with Engineers without Borders.
During last year's visit by Rotary Foundation President, Frank
Devlin, a review of these projects managed to leave Frank nearly speechless,
a feat many would expect to be impossible. Joe Looper, Dave Stewart, Claude
Piché, Alan Ashbaugh and many other club and committee members have led and
been involved with these projects.

Can you pan for gold on public land? -a resounding YES-and you "don't have to be a geologist to make some money. His interest began years ago when with he "found color" when panning on the Poudre with Cub Scout Pack 57. Rather than having technical geology skills, he says that an examination of the area through the eye of history is the best way to start. "Look for gold where it's been found in the past...read about and talk to the locals."
Ron emphasized the need to develop your panning skill first. "Don't expect to find gold nuggets - look for the gold in the sand deposits. And most importantly - take a gal with you who has an eye for gold."
