On March 26, 2008, the CSU Rams named Kristen Holt as the 10th women’s basketball head coach. Today we welcome Kristen, and hear her views on the state of CSU Women’s basketball, and the upcoming season.
While Holt, 39, was named head coach during a transition period, the situation is not unfamiliar to her. Following the 2000-01 seasons, her sixth season as an assistant coach at Radford University in Radford, Va., Holt was named interim head women’s basketball coach. Taking over a team predicted to finish last in the Big South, Holt guided Radford to an overall 11-16 mark, the school’s best mark in the previous three seasons. More impressive, however, was the team’s third-place finish (8-6) in Big South conference play, earning Holt Big South Coach of the Year. While at Radford, the team won the 1996 Big South Conference tournament championship and participated in the 1996 NCAA tournament, before losing to eventual champion Tennessee in Knoxville.
Holt also has a reputation for developing players. At Radford Kristen was instrumental in three all-Big South conference guards – Lorrie Mitchell, a first-team performer in 1998 and 1999, Catrice Horton, a first-team performer in 2000 and 2001, and Kim Hairston, a second-team honoree in 1997. She was also instrumental in developing the guards at Wichita State, where she coached before joining the Rams as assistant coach in 2004.
A native of Lima, Ohio, Holt graduated from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio in 1993, where she received her master's degree in physical education. She was a four-year letter winner for the Bobcats, and was named to the 1988 Mid-American Conference all-freshman team. She also served as OU's team captain from 1990-92.

Her husband, Bill, is a long time Rotarian, now with a Loveland club. Joanna is a Paul Harris Fellow, which she got as part of her engagement, that engagement being made at a Rotary District Conference. She said that she and her husband think that Fort Collins is the best of all the places they have lived and they hope to stay here.

Ernie Tellez presented his comments on why we should not support the ballot issue even though he is in favor or a facility at some time in the future. His main points in opposition during his five minutes were that there was not enough planning with all stakeholders and communities, no idea of possible future costs and that the facility would cost too much on a continuous basis.
These two presentations were followed by audience questions. Both Cheryl Olson and Gary Darling helped answer questions from the proponent’s side and all stayed after the meeting to answer other questions.
An interesting side light to the brief debate is that the Coloradoan came out in opposition to Referred Issue 1 A in its editorial in the Sunday, Oct. 12th edition. The Coloradoan’s comments were similar to those of Ernie Tellez.
