New Womens Basketball Coach

Kristen Holt

On March 26, 2008, the CSU Rams named Kristen Holt as the 10th women’s basketball head coach. Today we welcome Kristen, and hear her views on the state of CSU Women’s basketball, and the upcoming season.

While Holt, 39, was named head coach during a transition period, the situation is not unfamiliar to her. Following the 2000-01 seasons, her sixth season as an assistant coach at Radford University in Radford, Va., Holt was named interim head women’s basketball coach. Taking over a team predicted to finish last in the Big South, Holt guided Radford to an overall 11-16 mark, the school’s best mark in the previous three seasons. More impressive, however, was the team’s third-place finish (8-6) in Big South conference play, earning Holt Big South Coach of the Year. While at Radford, the team won the 1996 Big South Conference tournament championship and participated in the 1996 NCAA tournament, before losing to eventual champion Tennessee in Knoxville.

Holt also has a reputation for developing players. At Radford Kristen was instrumental in three all-Big South conference guards – Lorrie Mitchell, a first-team performer in 1998 and 1999, Catrice Horton, a first-team performer in 2000 and 2001, and Kim Hairston, a second-team honoree in 1997. She was also instrumental in developing the guards at Wichita State, where she coached before joining the Rams as assistant coach in 2004.

A native of Lima, Ohio, Holt graduated from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio in 1993, where she received her master's degree in physical education. She was a four-year letter winner for the Bobcats, and was named to the 1988 Mid-American Conference all-freshman team. She also served as OU's team captain from 1990-92.

Classification Talk

Joanna Reeves
President Jan Bertholf introduced Joanna Reeves to give her classification talk. Joanna’s classification is Advertising – Community Development. She is originally from California and has had a vast range of work experiences, mostly related to the newspaper and advertizing enterprises. She said that she started her first business at age 25 in Whitefish, Montana, a health food store, which gave her an appreciation of how hard it is to run a small business. Back in California, she worked for a newspaper then started an advertizing agency, then back in the newspaper business with Gannett followed by Swift Media in Reno. That led to a transfer to Fort Collins where she is now the Regional Director of Sales for New Ventures for Northern Colorado Communications Group, which includes the Greeley Tribune, Fort Collins Now, etc.

Her husband, Bill, is a long time Rotarian, now with a Loveland club. Joanna is a Paul Harris Fellow, which she got as part of her engagement, that engagement being made at a Rotary District Conference. She said that she and her husband think that Fort Collins is the best of all the places they have lived and they hope to stay here.

Cadet of the Month

Dennis Kaan

Captain Aaron Hansen

Cadet Jonathan Datsko
Dennis Kaan introduced Captain Aaron Hansen to introduce the Cadet of the Month, Air Force ROTC Cadet Jonathan Datsko. Captain Hansen is a new member of the CSU ROTC cadre. He came from Lackland Air Base in San Antonio, Texas and is in the communication career field. Captain Hansen introduced Cadet Datsko, a senior from Berthoud, Colorado. Jonathan gets special recognition for his planning of the annual POW/MIA Vigil, among other things. He is the commander of the unit's Arnold Air Society and hopes to become a pilot after graduation.

Jonathan thanked the club for the honor and recognized the rest of his cadet unit for their help in his success and recognition.

Foundation Minuet

Dave Stewart
Dave Stewart talked about a couple of our club’s water projects. He said that what we take for granted, potable water on the tables or easily available water from a tap, is unique in the world. In San Isidro, Colombia, Dave’s team planned and financed, with a Rotary Matching Grant of around $150,000, a water plant that drastically changed the death rate for young children and provided potable water for a community of 8,000. He also described the very unique project at an orphanage in Mexico, where rejuvenating a reservoir and the income from crops grown from the water the reservoir provides, will finance the education of the orphans. Our club member’s donations to the Rotary Foundation help finance these types of projects. Both of these projects aid in the sustainability of these communities.

Recognizing CSU Athletes

Greg Peterson

Billy Ferris
Shelly Godkin introduced CSU Football Offensive Coordinator Greg Peterson to the club. Shelly gave a short background of Greg’s twenty-four years of coaching experience, which includes his first year at CSU. Greg introduced the team’s quarterback, Billy Ferris, as a player who can become as good as he desires. Billy thanked the club for supporting CSU athletics and for recognizing him today. He gave us a little about his background. More on each of these guests can be found at: More About Greg & Billy

Last Week's Program

Peggy Reeves

Ernie Tellez

Cheryl Olson

Gary Darling
Bill West introduced the subject of our program, a brief debate about the Larimer County Referred Issue 1A, by reading the proposal. He outlined the procedure to be followed before introducing those who were the proponents of the Referred Issue. Peggy Reeves started the proponents side five minutes by reviewing the need and benefits of building and staffing a Mental Health & Detox Center in the county. All of the information she gave and the PowerPoint slides she showed are duplicated on their web site at: Vote Yes On 1A

Ernie Tellez presented his comments on why we should not support the ballot issue even though he is in favor or a facility at some time in the future. His main points in opposition during his five minutes were that there was not enough planning with all stakeholders and communities, no idea of possible future costs and that the facility would cost too much on a continuous basis.

These two presentations were followed by audience questions. Both Cheryl Olson and Gary Darling helped answer questions from the proponent’s side and all stayed after the meeting to answer other questions.

An interesting side light to the brief debate is that the Coloradoan came out in opposition to Referred Issue 1 A in its editorial in the Sunday, Oct. 12th edition. The Coloradoan’s comments were similar to those of Ernie Tellez.
