Dr. Barry Beaty
Dr. Barry Beaty, Colorado State University Chief Scientific Officer, will tell us about research in the MicroRX Infectious Disease Supercluster. He is a University Distinguished Professor who holds advanced degrees from the University of Wisconsin.

MicroRX, is a first-of-its-kind enterprise to speed the transition of life-saving research on infectious diseases from laboratories into the global marketplace. MicroRX is just the first of the university's "Superclusters" - alliances of academic researchers, economists and business experts designed to expedite the move of research to the marketplace.

A technology transfer specialist working for a division of CSU Ventures seeks opportunities for patents, licenses and startups, as well as equity investors. Additional support staff facilitate increased funding from foundations and the federal government. For instance an International Collaborations in Infectious Disease Research grant and accompanying Fogarty Center training grant are focused upon defining the virus and vector genetic determinants of dengue hemorrhagic fever in Mexico. A new NIH Emerging Virus Disease Unit contract and a CDC Fellowship Training program focus upon research and training needs in emerging viral diseases and vector-borne diseases.

Other research programs include longitudinal field studies on Hantavirus epidemic potential in Colorado and surveillance for West Nile virus introduction into Mexico.

Classification Talk

Amelia Streigel
Amelia Streigel gave us her classification talk using a Power Point presentation, a unique way. Born in Grand Junction, raised in Rangely before moving to Wyoming all the moving because her father was a pipeliner and moved to where there was work. Amelia said she had a unique background for our club because she was probably the only female who could operate a backhoe and drive a bulldozer. She then had the opportunity to spend a year in Germany as an exchange student and told us how much that experience meant to her. She graduated from CSU with a degree in Chemistry, worked for Honeywell as a software tester, moved to Munich, Germany to work for Wacher-Chemie as a translator. She moved back to the U.S. to be nearer her close nit family and to go back to CSU to get a Masters degree in Biomedical Sciences. She now works with the Molecular and Cellular Integrated Neuroscience Program at CSU. Her research involves studying fruit flies. She said she has been dating her boyfriend for four years and would appreciate any help she could get for him to take the plunge, because she is not getting any younger.

Foundation Minute

Ron Stoops
Ron Stoops enlightened us about the APF of the Rotary Foundation. APF stands for Annual Programs Fund and as Ron said, a favorite of all District Governors. Ron demonstrated the APF by using water in glasses and a Pitcher, putting water in and taking it out. The Rotary Foundation takes our contributions, keeps them for three years and uses the dividends for overhead. Then, one half of that money comes out to the World Fund to carry out programs. The other half comes back to the Districts as District Designated Funds. The District uses those funds for Matching Grants, Simplified Grants, GSE, etc. Ron also gave us some information on how to donate, the importance of donating to the Foundation and how much our club has donated in the past.

Teacher of the Month

Ryan Grindel
Garth McCann introduced Ryan Grindel an art teacher from Polaris School for Expeditionary Learning as October Teacher of the Month. Polaris is a Poudre School District School for grades seventh through 12th that uses an Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound design and is housed at Fossil Ridge High School. Students participate in learning expeditions that mirror their classroom curriculum. Ryan told a story that happened on an expedition to the Grand Canyon where one student was helped to overcome a fear with help from other students. Advances, growth, overcoming challenges, they are all tough things to do, for all of us. As a teacher I cherish those teachable moments, either in the art room or outside of the art room in the Grand Canyon.

Induction of New Member

Jim Harper

Barbara Jones
Jan Bertholf inducted Jim Harper, sponsored by John Roberts and Barbara Jones, sponsored by Judy Boggs and Bill Jones, as our newest club members. He welcomed them to the club and gave a brief description of Rotary and what is our expectations of them as members.
Induction is the conscious mental process by which we pass from the perception of particular phenomena (things and events) to the knowledge of general.
"I've come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that's as unique as a fingerprint - and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, working hard, and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you."
Oprah Winfrey

CSU Athletic Guests

Bill Schaffter

Brian Berryhill

April Thomas
Bill Schaffter introduced Brian Berryhill, the CSU Crosscountry Coach, to introduce one of the student athletes. Brian introduced April Thomas, a member of the womens crosscountry team. He also told us that the womens team is ranked 14th in the country and that April was the key leader of the team. April told us how she got to CSU and how much she enjoyed the experience of competing and living in Fort Collins.

Last Week's Program

Chuck Rutenberg
Chuck Rutenberg made a presentation about a proposed five year strategy for the club that was developed by a group comprised of Chuck, president elect Jan Bertholf, past presidents, Susie Ewing, John Roberts and Judy Boggs plus Claude Piche and Dave Stewart. After the team developed the strategy, Chuck presented it to the Board of Directors and to two groups of past presidents and past board members. The board approved this type of plan.

Chuck asked the audience to take the same perspective that he asked the development team to take; first keep an open mind and second, don't be afraid to think big. The Power Point presentation started with a slide showing all of the activities our club is doing at the present time and Chuck said that these make ours a very good club. He suggested that our club could become an outstanding club by overcoming a few challenges and taking on some specific initiatives.

The challenges that the club faces are similar challenges that are being encountered by all Rotary Clubs and are, membership, demographics, vitality and visibility. Chuck described some specifics of each of these. For example, in the last several years our membership has fallen from about 210 to 185 and that over 30 % of our membership is over 70 while only 17% is under 50. He said that none of these results are bad; they are what they are, but may not be in line with the things we want to do.

From an initiatives point of view the strategy called for three, expansion of resources, alignment of activities and emphasis and integration. Since our club already has outstanding member resources, an increase in membership and effectively using them plus carrying out the strategic plan will cover the first of these initiatives. Chuck used Rotary's most successful program, Polio Plus, as a guide to describe what the team meant by the alignment of activities initiative. He said that Polio Plus was focused, was a highly active program, used collaboration well and was very visible. The suggestion is that if our club would use these same criteria, our club and our programs will be more successful. The strategy suggests additionally that with emphasis and integration, the third initiative, our efforts will also be enhanced. Emphasis would mean the possibility of emphasizing some programs versus others and integration would mean using some programs like the 4-Way Test, Scholarships and International Work to enhance another program.

The strategy suggests that we take one of our current programs and follow these initiatives so that we can get a feeling of how they would work and how effective they will be. Matthews House, a current recipient of one of our community grants, was the suggested program to use as the example. Chuck described specifically and in detail how the initiatives would work with Matthews House.

He suggested that there is a major question that needs to be addressed if we use this strategy to enhance our efforts and results. Since changing the way we finance service and charitable projects has not changed over many years and since inflation eats into the amount we apply to these projects, we are really being less and less effective. The strategy team suggested four ways to change this:

Increase the charitable portion of our dues
Increase membership dramatically
Cut back on our activities (what we are currently doing due to inflation and static dues)
Raise money

At this time Chuck asked for comments about these four possibilities. There was a lot of discussion about them and the strategy as a whole. He then asked for buy in from the club and for ongoing comments to him and other members of the team. There was a general buy in to the strategy, but due to the length of the program, some members that left early did not get to give input to this call. We will hear more about this proposed club direction in the future.
