Tanis Roeder
Donna Chapel announced that the History Fellowship will hold its first evening on Nov. 12. She also brought to the clubs attention the thank you notes from third graders for the dictionaries that they received via Rotary.

Ron Stoops said that 31 showed up to clean up the highway, possibly a record, including Interactors from Poudre High School (6) and kids (5). No money was found, but one interesting item. The most interesting thing found was an Inmate ID card from the Colorado Deptartment of Corrections. Ron called about the card, was instructed to send in the card, and made a photocopy of it to show the club. The inmate was still incarcerated—so how did his card get onto the highway?

Judy Boggs announced that beginning next week we can contribute wine for our Christmas raffle. Tanis Roeder has made arrangements at Supermarket Liquors and Wilbur’s to give specials to Rotarians who identify themselves. Hopefully many of our club will donate two bottles of wine and sell five tickets for this fundraiser. Tickets will be available next week.

Dawn Davis needs more participants in the Rotary Shopping Card program. Remember Christmas is coming up!! Gift cards are a good way to support this fundraising effort.

Jim Mucklow will provide a write-up of the trip that will be available on the tables and at the secretaries table. Please see Jim, Melanie Chamberlain or Alan Ashbaugh if you are interested. Go to the China Trip details. The brochure for this trip can be viewed on our web site at: Imperial Jewels of China Trip

There is still a need for club volunteers for a 4-Way Test at Front Range CC on November 16,17 & 18 for about 150 Junior and Senior high school students taking career oriented courses at FRCC. This is an effort led by the Breakfast Rotary Club and involves Rotarians from Loveland, Windsor and Fort Collins. The sign up sheets are for specific career oriented areas, but all interested Rotarians should sign up.

Every Rotarian Every Year, Letter to Rotarians

Jonathan Majiyagbe
Foundation Trustee Chair
The Rotary Foundation is recognized as one of the most respected private foundations in the world. Through the Foundation, we as Rotarians have an unprecedented opportunity to use our global grassroots strength and international prominence to help solve major problems such as food and water security -- if the Foundation's financial resources keep pace.

The twin pillars of Foundation support – the Annual Programs Fund and the Permanent Fund – are crucial to meeting world needs. The Foundation enables our clubs and districts to multiply their service efforts many times over. This effect is increasing as the Foundation's humanitarian grant projects become larger in scale to profoundly improve the lives of more people.

We can help Make Dreams Real for children and their families today by giving at least US$100 to the Annual Programs Fund through the Every Rotarian, Every Year initiative. And we can help ensure their needs will be met tomorrow by building a strong endowment through contributions to the Permanent Fund .

Our Foundation's humanitarian grants, Rotary World Peace Fellows, and other programs are essential to realizing a better world. Together, let's embrace both pillars of Foundation support and expand our capacity to improve health, support education, alleviate poverty, and light the way to peace.

The Rotarian Magazine on the Web
Rotary has teamed up with Google to make nearly 100 years of The Rotarian available free online. Full-color, searchable scans of all issues of the magazine from 1959 to 2008 are now available through Google Books, with more issues to follow. The site is accessible from The Rotarian's page on the RI Web site. Users can select from a gallery of issues organized by decade or click "Search all issues" to search the entire catalog for a word or phrase. The collaboration is part of an initiative to make Rotary's historical resources more accessible to Rotarians worldwide.

"Google is doing all of the scanning and indexing to make the material searchable -- and at no cost to Rotary," says Stephanie Giordano, archivist for Rotary International. To access all issues, use the following link: Past Rotarian Magazine Issues

Last Week's Program

Mike Anderson

Jack Harvey
After an extremely short introduction by Mike Anderson, retired sports medicine doctor Jack Harvey began what turned out to be one of the most original and intriguing presentations we've ever had. While describing his growing obsession with and participation in astrophotography, Dr. Harvey told us how his wife had given him a 14.5 inch RCOS telescope and how they had built a small observatory and started taking pictures of outer space, as a hobby. Because they did not like the quality of the early photos, they went to New Mexico and rented a dome. The pictures improved. Then they discovered that some people in Chile were planning to build six observatories, so they volunteered to help. The pictures of the Chilean site were impressive, as were the satellite photos that they took of the moon, star clusters, M106 galaxies, and a shot of one galaxy that had collided with another.

How do they function as photographers? Jack explained that they now log onto Chile on the Internet, tell the site to take pictures, and in what has become a rather complicated process they then collect frames and put them together. Last year, one of their pictures of what is called the Horsehead Nebula appeared in the National Geographic Magazine. Jack then showed a photo of the Witch's Head nebula that UNESCO is publishing this year. Then he finished up his still photograph displays by showing a planetary nebula that has exploded, as well as the Eye of God nebula and a number of galaxies that he has photographed with a group in Spain.

The finale was a fascinating three-minute movie that summarized his work so far, and he invited viewers to observe his pictures on his web site at www.starshadows.com or by Googling SSRO. An impressive program indeed.

Jack answered many interesting questions from our club members.

China Trip Information
Dear Rotarians, Friends and Guests,
You’re invited to join us on a 12 day phenomenal itinerary on July 22, 2010 presenting China Key Highlights. By enrolling right away we can save you and your companion on the cost by offering 2 for one on the Yangtze River Cruise including Xian and Beijing, sightseeing and all meals included at the lowest prices with featured discounts, and includes a fund raiser for Rotarians. This Cruise features the Viking 5 Star Century Sun and stays in Distinctive Hotels.

Our departure of July 22, 2010 is planned for everyone to have the best departure dates and timed for the Education Employee to better fit theirs and their family’s break dates. Parents and grandparents are encouraged to bring their children, young adults and Grandchildren on this cultural and historical trip.

We will explore Shanghai, China’s most modern city, cruise the legendary Yangtze between Wuhan and Chongquing where we make our way through the scenic Three Gorges and the wildly beautiful Lesser Gorges, explore the engineering marvel of the Three Gorges Dam and at Xian stare into the faces of thousands of Terra Cotta Warriors who were buried with Emperor Qin Shi Huang. In Beijing, explore historic imperial treasures like The Forbidden City, the Great Wall and the much publicized Tiananmen Square..

Again this year, we anticipate a wonderful time as the participants had last year! All are welcome! Particularly those who really want to understand the origins of Chinese culture should strongly consider this itinerary — an ultimate China experience. The larger the numbers, the more benefits to the Rotary funds. For questions or to make reservations call any of the Fund Raising Committee member.
