Stand up and salute veterans from all branches of the military services, including Rotarians, guests and relatives of Rotarians on active duty. This "Salute to Veterans" will also be a "Changing of the Guard" as the next generation prepares to assume the role of the defenders of our country-and our difficult, but imperative, cause of freedom!
In addition to many Rotary and guest veterans, we are pleased to welcome numerous cadets and cadre from the Army and Air Force ROTC detachments at CSU-the next generation, who will soon share the strongest of bonds, forged during both peace and war, among military personnel.
Rifles and bayonets will again be flying with precision during a demonstration by the Cadet Drill Team, the "Wing Walker/Pershing Rifle Team." Also a presentation by third year Army ROTC Cadet Dustin Mackie, from Parker, Colorado, will exemplify and recall the values of "Duty, Honor, Country," described by General of the Army, Douglas MacArthur, in his historic farewell speech of May 12, 1962.
In charge of the day's deployment is former Commander of the Air Force ROTC Detachment at Colorado State University, and Past
President of our Rotary Club, Shelly Godkin.

Health Volunteers Overseas is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to improving the availability and quality of health care in developing countries through training and education of local health care providers.
Unlike health organizations that serve for a week-then leave, HVO trains, educates and then leaves personnel behind to assist. Headquartered in Washington DC, HVO provides health assistance in 14 areas from Nursing to Anesthesiology in 25 developing countries of the world. They estimate that there is a shortage of 4,250,000 health care workers. Sub-Sahara Africa has 11% of the world's population-but has 24% of the world's burden of disease-and only 3% of the world's health care workers.
Health Volunteers Overseas teams up with the help of Rotary International. HVO followed Ed Blair who started a Rotary Grant Polio Program in Malawi, Africa-and it's still in operation today.
This year O'Linda went to the mountains of Uganda to provide health care for the park employees and their families at Bwindi-in triple canopy jungle. Additionally she helped form another facility, which is partially funded by Rotary International and treats pygmies in Uganda. When she arrived, Dr Kellerman said, "Do you know about premies? Can you help?" They were desperate for gestational education. (The X-ray machine, books, and some cattle were provided by RI.) She told the story of Dr. Rodney L. Belcher who started a Department of Orthopedic Surgery in 1989 through a Rotary Grant. He was killed in 1996 and HVO took over the education and brought in a full-time resident Orthopedic surgeon.
As a neonatal nurse practitioner O'Linda compared the 6 deliveries/day here at PVH hospital with one facility that has 100 deliveries per day. She said there were only 2 Doctors, 2 Interns, and 2 Nurses to do 36,000 annual deliveries. One day the staff went to lunch leaving her to manage all the babies-she resuscitated three!
Through the efforts of Health Volunteers Overseas and support from organizations like Rotary International, the child mortality rate has been reduced from 35% to 18% over the past several years-and still there is more to do!
