Rotary Read Program

Marianne Mitchell
Marianne Mitchell is the award-winning author of nine children's books and more than 100 stories and articles in national children's magazines, including Jack and Jill, New Moon, Pockets, and Highlights for Children. A Fort Collins resident, this year's Rotary Read author grew up in Phoenix, AZ, has worked as a teacher but now writes full time.

Marianne's picture books include "Maya Moon" (a Mexican folktale), "Joe Cinders" (a cowboy Cinderella tale) and "Gullywasher Gulch" (a tall tale). She also enjoys reading and writing novels for young readers. Her love of the West is evident in her books. "Finding Zola" is a mystery set in southern Arizona near Tucson and "Firebug" is set among the red rocks of Sedona. Her newest book, "Windows of Gold," offers a variety adventure, mystery, animals, fantasy and folktales. She recently finished a young adult historical novel set in the mining town of Silver Plume in 1884.

Marianne thinks that writing stories is the best job she's ever had. But what she enjoys most is visiting schools to talk about books and encouraging kids to write their own stories. On behalf of Rotary Read she is speaking with students at Bennett, O'Dea, Shepardson and Tavelli Elementary.

Committee Spotlight
Rotary READ Committee
Chair:      Brian Burck
Meeting time: Call of the Chair
Purpose:
Rotary READ Fort Collins' (RRFC) mission is to foster a love of reading in elementary school-aged students, with a special focus on students in grades 4 through 6. This emphasis is given by the program to help instill good reading habits before students experience junior high school and high school demands. RRFC is a unique coalition of the four Fort Collins, Rotary International Clubs , the Fort Collins Public Library, and the Poudre School District . The RRFC is comprised of representatives of all three coalition members. RRFC's activities (see below) focus on being an effective adjunct to educators' and library professionals' efforts to increase reading habits at an early age.

Brian Burck

Goals:

  1. Place books in the hands of elementary school-aged students by having a Rotary READ week each fall. During the week have each student read (or have someone read to them) at least 15 minutes per day for one week.
  2. Energize budding writers and readers with a personal knowledge of popular writers and understand how books are written by having one or two noted authors make presentatiions to each of 6 to 8 schools, public libraries, and/or private schools in the Fort Collins area each spring.
  3. Have Rotary READ Fort Collins 100% self funded.

Members can find information about all committees by visiting the online list of all of the club's committees on the web at: FC Rotary Club Committees

CSU Student Athlete

Dustin Morris
Bill Schaffter introduced CSU Golf Coach, Jamie Bernal to introduce one of hie golfers, Dustin Morris. Colorado State sophomore Dustin Morris was selected as the Mountain West Conference Men's Golfer of the Month for November. In Colorado State's only tournament of the month, Morris, a Crosby, Texas, native, led the Rams to a record-breaking finish to close the fall season, and a second consecutive tournament title at the Agua-Caliente Air Force Invitational, held Nov. 10-11, at the Indian Canyons Golf Resort in Palm Springs, Calif.

Morris captured his first career title on the 6,582-yard par 72 course, carding rounds of 65-66-63 to finish with a 22-under par 194, 12 strokes better than his previous best set at the 2007 NCAA Regional. He competed against 56 other golfers to take the crown, posting a scoring average of 64.67. His final round score leads the MWC as the lowest round this season, is a career-best by three strokes and ties the Colorado State program record set by Zen Brown at the 2006 Cougar Classic. With Morris leading the way, the Rams eclipsed their previous team single-round record in each of the three rounds. The Rams' overall score of 787 (-77) surpassed their 54-hole record by 42 strokes. This marks Morris' first career golfer of the month award.

Board of Directors Note

The Board of Directors has received a membership application for Al Schorre sponsored by John-David Sullivan. If club members have any comments on this application, please address them to the Club Secretary, Donal Johnson, within the next seven days. The Board regretfully accepted the resignation of Jim Clark.

Last Week's Program

Frank Devlyn
Frank Devlyn, past Rotary International President and past chairman of the Foundation Board, visited our club on November 27th and 28th. During his visit he spent nearly two hours with the World Community Service Committee, had lunch with the presidents of the Fort Collins Rotary Clubs, participated in a 4-Way Test Session at Lesher Junior High, spoke at the Annual Foundation Dinner on Tuesday night and at our regular Wednesday noon meeting.

The Tuesday night Annual Foundation Dinner was attended by about 130 Rotarians and guests. Chuck Rutenberg introduced the many present and past International and District officers before introducing Frank to speak to the group. Frank warmed up the audience by recognizing both new and long term Rotarians. He had all Rotarians stand and then progressing through length of membership until the only one standing was the Rotarian with the longest membership in Rotary, which happened to be Charlie Peterson. His presentation was about why people join and stay in Rotary and he referenced his "Frank Talk" books that cover those subjects. The main part of his presentation was about the great work that the Rotary Foundation does and what world wide credibility that brings to Rotary. He announced that the Gates Foundation has awarded Rotary a $100 million challenge grant to help finish the Polio Plus efforts. All Rotarians at the dinner received a copy of Frank's third book, focusing on the Foundation.

Then Frank, District Governor Nancy Pettus and Chuck recognized two members of our club for their donations to the Rotary Foundation that qualify them as members of The Bequest Society. Claude Piché was given the Bequest Society recognition crystal with one diamond and Bonnie Titley was given the recognition crystal with five diamonds. Club members can learn more about the Bequest Society and the recognition levels by doing a search of the Bequest Society on the Rotary web site.

Chuck Rutenberg presided over our regular Wednesday noon meeting that was attended by many guests, including US Congress Representative Marilyn Musgrave and District Governor Nancy Pettus. Frank Devlyn was again the speaker. He recognized the work of World Community Service Committee in our efforts to reduce Dengue Fever and our water projects and recognized those who participated in the mornings 4-Way Test exercise. His presentation was similar to what he said the night before, emphasizing why join and stay in Rotary. Again he talked about and told stories about what the Foundation does, why that brings great credibility to Rotary and what that credibility does to help with our international projects, especially for Polio Plus.

After his motivational talk, Frank, Chuck and Nancy Pettus recognized members of our club that have become Paul Harris Fellows or who have recognized family members or friends as Paul Harris Fellows. Receiving Paul Harris Fellowship recognition for their donation were: Sue Wagner, Jon Radtke, Brenda Carns, Garth McCann, Warren Garst, Terry Everett, and Milan Rewerts.
