Jay Pratz introduced Derrick Searle, a teacher and coach at Poudre High School, to introduce the Student of the Month for May. Mr Searle told us that he was the teacher/sponsor for the Mentoring Group at Poudre High School, a group of 50 leaders who work with the incoming Freshman to ease their transition to High School. He then introduced Lance Gloss who he said was wise beyond his years and is recognized by the others in the Mentoring Group as the leader of leaders...

Lance said he was told to talk about his hobbies and service efforts. Instead, Lance talked about self as a part of service. He said that he grew up learning that service was not separate from community. A lot of time we talk about service as separate from community. He believes that those two words go together and to talk about them separately leaves the definition of service blurry. He believes that service is all about building a community. Making those two words work together is hard because our modern landscape in school and elsewhere is made up of members who come from different backgrounds and environments. He wanted us to remember that community and service go together and service is both words, nurturing the connections between us as a community. He said that when we are lucky enough to be together it is important to dedicate the service to improving that time. We could all learn something about service from Lance and his group of Mentors at Poudre.
