Garth McCann introduced Sandy Bickel, the principal of Weber Middle School, to introduce the Teacher of the Month. First Garth informed us that Sandy was retiring this year after 53 years in the Poudre School District, 13 as a student and 40 as a staff member. Sandy introduced Shannon Dreessen, a Family Consumer Sciences teacher. Ms. Bickel said the reason Shannon was selected was because she was caring and inclusive of all students and had their trust, respect and now love of her students. She read a couple of comments from students that mentioned those traits...

Shannon Dreessen told us that her goal today was to inform us just what a Family Consumer Sciences teacher does. First she said that she always wanted to be a teacher, even as early as the fourth grade, when she said she loved to write on the chalk board and wanted to grade papers. She obtained her degree from CSU and started at Weber 11 years ago.

She then told us about some of the course parts as named by her of Family Consumer Sciences. First she described Extreme Make-over (Interior Design), then Project Runway (Fashion Design), and then Who Wants to Be A Millionaire (Personal Finance). She said that she also instructs in careers, nutrition, sewing and cooking, etc. One of the good things about the material she teaches is that she never gets the question, “why do I need to learn this”. And lastly she leads a group that is called FCCLA (Family, Career & Community Leadership of America) which she said is like the old FHA organization. Their work is service volunteering and she listed several service efforts that they have been involved in. She ended by saying that now we can tell others what Family Consumer Sciences is all about.
