Nov. 3rd: Reducing and Eliminating the Human Health Threat of Militarism
For our November 3rd noon meeting on Zoom, our guest speaker will be David Swanson, who plans to develop and present a case for tackling militarism itself as a major cause and threat of death and morbidity. He will be introduced by Bill Timpson. Our speaker means by “militarism” to include wars, war planning, basing of troops, weapons manufacture and testing, weapons dealing and stockpiling, and the threat of nuclear apocalypse. Mr. Swanson has concluded that the suffering and death caused by the diversion of resources into militarism are greater than that which resulted from all the wars and war preparations. READ MORE...
The Sustainable Peacebuilding Fellowship will welcome David Swanson, discussing "Militarism and Health: Confronting the Health Threat of Militarism". Fellowship will meet Wednesday, Nov. 3rd, at 1:30, on Zoom following our regular meeting.
RECAP: Beneficial to All Concerned: Rotary's Commitment to DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion)
For our in-person meeting of 27 October, Rotarian Lynne Baker, with the help of Mary Ontiveros and Del Benson, reviewed for us the new Rotary International policy on DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) and then summarized the results from the recent Rotary Club of Fort Collins survey of attitudes across our club on DEI. She pointed out that the survey and analysis were organized by the DEI Subcommittee of our Club Noon Program Committee and that they are consistent with and parallel to the recent programs that have been relevant, informative, and transformative in the area of inclusion and diversity. On Wednesday, November 10th, noon at the Lincoln Center, in a timely presentation for Veterans Day, Bill Kennedy, a retired USAF officer and military planner in the Pentagon, talks with us on national defense spending. Our speaker reports that “Defending our nation and its citizens is one of the most important responsibilities of the federal government, so mandated in our constitution. The event will be Sunday, December 5th from 5:30pm to 8:30pm at the Fort Collins Country Club.
Attire: festive, holiday, whatever you feel comfortable in – Santa Clause and elf costumes are allowed Cost: $50 per person (this includes 1 alcoholic beverage if desired - Cash bar is available for additional beverages) Menu: Country Club employees will be serving buffet style – there will be a fish or beef option (vegetarian diets can be accommodated with advanced notice) Note: all country club employees facilitating our event will be COVID vaccinated. Entertainment: There will be live cello music during cocktail hour; dinner entertainment planned but not finalized; and door prizes.
