This Wednesday, June 2nd, RCFC inaugurates a new CORNERSTONE SERIES, with a presentation by fellow Rotarian, Carl Maxey. Cornerstone Series will be a quarterly event featuring successes and failures of local companies, and what the leaders learned from their experiences. Following an introduction by Bill West, Carl will share stories of the company founded in 1969 in Fort Collins.
On June 2nd, during our evening meeting, Waleska Crowe will share her life’s journey as it interweaves with Rotary and community development in Guatemala. There are deep inequalities in Guatemala, with a long history of structural issues, racism, and social problems. Many indigenous people live in poverty or extreme poverty. Waleska’s mother was indigenous Quiche Mayan and father was of European descent. This unique background allows Waleska to bring tremendous wisdom and heart into her work with rural Guatemalan communities.
Our Fort Collins Rotary Club has wonderful new ties helping bring improved sanitation and safe water to needy communities outside Asuncion, Paraguay, South America. The Rotary Foundation just approved a Global Grant for $36,000 which will install handwashing stations, each serving 150 residents in the Banado Norte neighborhoods. Our partners in this project are Habitat for Humanity and the Rotary Club of Luque, Paraguay. The handwashing stations will be located in high transit spots in the neighborhoods, helping minimize transmission of Covid-19. Mara Johnson and Robin Steele, members of our club’s International Projects and Grants committee, guided this Global Grant to approval.
During our noon Zoom meeting May 26, Tony Paulus (Past President of the Jackson Hole Rotary Club) summarized how he led the revitalization of his Rotary Club with possible lessons for our own club. Tony, a lifelong educator and a former member of Rotary clubs in Michigan and Florida, commented on three aspects of club membership that drew him in, fellowship, meals, and service. Although the Jackson Hole club included many of the movers and shakers of the area in its membership, it was largely male and it was shrinking.
During his first meeting as President, Del Benson outlined his priorities and thoughts for RY 2020-21. He touched on the challenges of declining noon membership and the resultant reduction in income and charitable pledges to support our service mission. Del then outlined his priorities and a "U+2" Time, Talent and Treasure Challenge for every member:
Bring in two new members
Double contributions to Rotary funding needs
Help on two funding initiatives
Give time to two additional service projects
Organize new projects and outcomes
Attend two more meetings every quarter
Combine categories engaging U+2 and have twice the fun and accomplishments
President Del Benson announced a $10,000 donation to the RCFC Legacy Fund from David Everitt and the Everitt family, in support of the Good and Lucky Non-Event! This brings the total raised to $70,000, plus a $19,000 matching grant for the United Way Fire Relief fund! The total raised was $89,000!
King Soopers Update
Marty Bachman and Sally Lee report that just 35 families shopping at King Soopers earned $524.87 last quarter - just for shopping! That's a $525 donation that goes directly into our charitable budget. If you haven’t signed up yet, see Sally or Marty.
Topic: Short-Term Lessons from Covid-19 that relate to Long-Term Behaviors with Climate Change. All are welcome!
